ITINERARY

Mitú is often added as an extension to any of our other birding tours in Colombia. This journey takes you into the Amazonian forests of Vaupés, where white-sand forest, terra firme rainforest, wetlands, streams, and granite outcrops support a distinctive mix of birdlife. The itinerary can be tailored to fit your wider travel plans.

Arrive in Bogotá and meet your driver and guide for a transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is set aside to settle in and prepare for the journey south.

Highlights

  • Airport pickup and transfer to your hotel
  • Overnight in Bogotá, at approximately 2,600 m (8,530 ft)

We’ll take a morning flight of nearly two hours over vast stretches of intact Amazon rainforest before arriving in Mitú. The town retains the character of a typical Amazonian settlement, surrounded by dense forest and shaped by its location along the Vaupés River. Mitú was once deeply affected by Colombia’s armed conflict; today, its surrounding forests and remarkable birdlife are drawing increasing interest from birders.
After settling in, we’ll visit Cerro Urania, near town, for our first birding excursion. The area offers an introduction to the region’s forest habitats, including terra firme forest and patches of white-sand vegetation, with trails and openings that let us explore different levels of the forest.

A gentle first afternoon of birding at the first indigenous reserve

We’ll explore Bocatoma, where white-sand forest meets taller terra firme rainforest. These neighboring ecosystems have different vegetation and bird communities, so we’ll move between them throughout the day, watching forest edges and trails as well as denser interior habitat. Birding here can involve patient searching and careful listening, with opportunities to encounter a rich variety of Amazonian forest birds.

A rewarding day exploring the contrasting white-sand and terra firme forests.

We’ll explore the road and its forest edges, where changes in vegetation can bring different birds into view, then listen and look for understory species in the surrounding forest. This is a rewarding day for patient birding, as many of the specialties are easier to detect by sound than by sight.

Vaupes river in Mitu

Mitú offers natural opportunities to photograph birds in a range of Amazonian settings. We’ll look for subjects along forest trails, at clearings, and around rocky and riverside habitats. Dense vegetation and low light can make some forest photography challenging, so patience and flexibility in the field are helpful.

  • Photograph birds in white-sand forest and terra firme rainforest
  • Capture forest landscapes, granite outcrops, and Amazonian waterways
  • Look for birds along trails, forest edges, and clearings
  • Enjoy opportunities for both dedicated photographers and birders who like to take photos
  • Be prepared for variable light and birds partly hidden by dense vegetation
