A protected Andean forest corridor

Otún-Quimbaya, nestled in Colombia’s Central Andes, is a small protected area that forms part of an important ecological corridor linking Ucumarí Regional Park and Los Nevados National Park. Its varied habitats and rich birdlife make it one of the region’s most rewarding birding destinations.

A major highlight is the endemic Cauca Guan. Birders can also look for restricted-range species such as Crested Ant-Tanager, Stiles’s Tapaculo, and Multicolored Tanager, alongside Grayish Piculet, Moustached Antpitta, and the rare Hooded Antpitta. Along the Otún River, Torrent Ducks and White-capped Dippers may be seen, while tanagers, wrens, barbtails, tyrannulets, and woodcreepers inhabit the surrounding forest. Red Howler Monkeys add to the area’s wildlife encounters.

A morning visit offers a rewarding introduction, but a full day allows more time to explore the sanctuary’s habitats and search for its diverse birdlife.
