BIRDING DAY TRIP – MANIZALES

Los Nevados NP & Termales road

4,000 m | 13,100 ft

Full day

Connects with Hacienda El Bosque

Páramo and elfin forest in high Central Andes

Los Nevados National Natural Park is the main destination on this route. Its páramo is a unique and important high-Andean ecosystem: these open landscapes store and regulate water, support specialized wildlife, and connect the lower forests with the mountain peaks. Cold winds, high humidity, and sharp temperature changes shape the habitat and its birdlife. Here, birders can look for high-elevation specialties such as the endemic Buffy Helmetcrest and the rare Rufous-fronted Parakeet, found around the park.

The visit continues along Termales Road, descending through páramo, dwarf forest, and high-Andean forest. A stop at Hotel Termales del Ruiz offers the chance to watch hummingbirds at its feeders, including Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Black-thighed Puffleg, Golden-breasted Puffleg, Purple-backed Thornbill, and Great Sapphirewing.

This route makes an excellent complement to Hacienda El Bosque. Depending on your interests and pace, it can be planned as a short visit, a full day, or a day and a half of birding across distinct high-Andean habitats.
